Dark Circles under Eyes

What are Dark Circles?

Eyes are one of the most important as well as wonderful organs in our body. Healthy, sparkling eyes make your personality attractive. Dark circles under the eyes are one of the most common skin problems caused by broken blood vessels under the skin around the eyes. Dark circles under the eyes make you appear old, tired or under stress.

Factors that Cause Dark circles

There are a number of different factors that cause dark circles under the eyes which include:

  • Thinning skin: The skin around the eyelids is thin and sensitive. As we age, the skin around the eyes becomes thinner and the blood vessels underneath become more visible, giving the appearance of dark circles.
  • Allergies: Allergy to airborne substances, such as pollen, dust, and pet dander can cause an itching sensation in the eyes which can lead to dark circles because of the continuous rubbing of the eyes. Dark circles may be seen in people with hay-fever during the peak of the allergy season. Certain food allergies can also cause dark circles.
  • Genetics: Dark circles under the eyes are usually inherited and tend to be more visible commonly in people with fair skin or deep-set eyes.
  • Fluid retention: Dark circles can be a symptom of conditions that cause fluid retention such as heart, liver, thyroid and kidney diseases.
  • Lack of sleep: Lack of sleep can cause paleness of the skin, allowing the blood vessels underneath the skin to become more visible and appear bluish or dark.
  • Dehydration: Dark circles can be a symptom of dehydration.
  • Iron deficiency anaemia: Iron deficiency anemia can contribute to the bluish discolouration of the area under the eyes.

Remedies to eliminate Dark circles

Following are some of the remedies that can help to make the dark circles less visible temporarily and prevent from worsening:

  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Use sunscreen whenever outdoors to prevent skin damage.
  • Take sufficient rest.
  • Apply cool tea bags or slices of cucumber over closed eyes for about 15 minutes.
  • Restrict the amount of salt in your diet.
  • Consume food rich in vitamin C as it helps to strengthen the walls of the blood vessels.
